Because dance is a physical activity there is always a risk of injury. I hope you don’t get injured but, just in case, you should know the words used to talk about injuries.

What are some common injuries that dancers get?

Sprain

A sprain is a sudden stretching or tearing of ligaments. The most common place to have a sprain is the ankle.

Fracture

When a bone is broken it is called a fracture. We can also simply call it a break.

Stress Fracture

If a bone slowly cracks over time because of repeated pressure it is called a stress fracture.

Muscle Tear

A muscle tear can also be called a "pulled muscle”. Some of the muscle tissue is damaged. Often this happens when the dancer moves without good control or has not warmed up properly.

Bruise

A bruise is caused when something hits the body. Usually it is not a serious injury but it can be very painful.

Cut

A cut is an injury to the skin caused by a sharp object. How serious the cut is depends on where it is, how deep it is, and how much it is bleeding.

Graze

A graze is the result of scraping the skin. Young children often graze their knees and hands if they fall when they are running.

Take the quiz to find out if you can remember the names of the different injuries.

Here is a list of elements.

The list of elementsis like a list of ingredients for baking. You can make many different things from the same ingredients.

Here is a simple explanation of each element I have included on the list.

1/ center 中心

Find the center of your body and learn to move from that place. The location of your center depends on the proportions of your body.

2/ gravity 重力

Feel the pull of gravity and learn how to work against it and with it.

3/ balance バランス

Feel that all parts of your body are connected. Using imagery is useful.

4/ posture

Find good alignment of your body. Pay attention to your pelvis and spine. Place your feet well on the floor and support your head and shoulders.

5/ gesture 身振り

People can show feelings and ideas by using movements that are recognized anywhere in the world. Be aware of these movements to strengthen your power of communication as a dancer.

6/ rhythm リズム

Good rhythm is essential for dance. Improve your rhythm by paying attention to the music.

7/ breath

You must breathe to live but, as a dancer, you can also use your breath to enhance your movement.

8/ moving in space

When you dance you are in a place with objects and, maybe, other people. Be aware of what is around you and move through the space that is available.

9/ time / speed

How long will you take to perform the step? How quickly or slowly will you move? Time and speed go together.

10/ energy / effort

Different movements need different levels of energy and effort. You can choose to do a movement intensely or loosely.

As you continue to explore these elements in contemporary dance class you will start to feel a difference in ballet class because the elements apply to all forms of dance.

Exciting or Excited? I’m confused!「

Helen Price

Exciting or Excited? I’m confused!

Saying "exciting" when it should be "excited" is a common mistake made by non-native English speakers.

Maybe this will help you remember.

“ing” describes the thing.

“ed” is in your head.

This book about ballet is interesting.

Would I like to read this book about ballet?

I’m interested!

The jet coaster is exciting!

I’m going to ride on the jet coaster. I’m excited!

The Tokyo subway system is confusing.

I’m trying to find my way on the Tokyo subway. I’m confused!

Long train rides are boring.

When I ride on the train I am bored.

Here are some more adjectives that end with "ing" or "ed".

amazing    amazed

relaxing    relaxed

surprising    surprised

challenging    challenged

Train Your Brain

Helen Price

To become a dancer you will spend many long hours in the studio training your body to make it strong and flexible, but don't forget, you must also train your brain.

Train Your Brain

Here are some ways you can do that.

Watch Other People

Watch other people dance.

When you are dancing certain areas in your brain are being used. When you watch someone else dance those same areas of your brain are activated.

So, it's good for your brain to watch your teacher demonstrate the choreography or to watch another dancer perform choreography that you are learning.

Mark the Choreography

Mark the choreography.

Marking the choreography gives your brain a chance to process the order of the steps and the dynamics of each movement. A study done at the University of California found that dancers who take time to mark the choreography perform better than dancers who only practice full out.

Use Your Eyes and Proprioception 1

Use Your Eyes and Proprioception 2

Use your eyes and your proprioception.

Mirrors in the studio can be used to correct your positions. When you look in the mirror you are getting information through your eyes. After you have done that take a moment to close your eyes and feel the correct placement. This will train your proprioception.

Looking in the Mirror is Not Ideal

Take a Video

Take a video.

Using mirrors to watch yourself move is not ideal because your head and eyes will not be placed properly. It is better to ask a friend to take a video of you dancing. When you watch the video you can really concentrate on seeing how you are moving and thinking about how you can improve.

Use Imagery

Use imagery.

Use imagery to remember the order and dynamics of a dance. This is especially useful with contemporary dance because it doesn't have names for all the steps.

Keep a Journal

Keep a journal.

Write notes about the choreography and the corrections your teacher gives you. Taking the time to do this will give you a chance to think through the dance. Read your notes before the next class or rehearsal.

Visualize yourself dancing.

Find time to close your eyes and imagine yourself performing the dance. When you think about doing a dance your brain is working in the same way as when you are actually doing the dance. It helps if you can play the music for the dance as you visualize it. Imagine yourself performing better than you did in class. Next time you do the dance you will feel an improvement.

Follow up to my blog: On Compliments & Corrections, and Being a Strict Ballet Teacher in Japan

Helen Price

Over the past week I have been posting blogs on the ABP website. So far the blogs have been “re-postings” of ones I wrote for the Yokohama Ballet Intensive website, blogs that I feel are still relevant.

I was surprised (pleasantly!) by the response to one blog:

On Compliments & Corrections, and Being a Strict Ballet Teacher in Japan

Not only did people leave very interesting comments under the blog, I also had a few video calls to discuss further.

Here are a few of the comments:

I believe I shouldn’t try to control my students with fear.

Research tells us that the brain does not learn when fear is present, period.

Sometimes, when a student comes from a very strict teacher […] then is with a new teacher that compliments, they relax and lose motivation [but] once they realize they need self motivation and self discipline they return to working with good results.

[When students] know that they are going to hear criticism as well as praise it leaves [their] minds more open for discussion.

Many of us are looking for more effective ways to guide and inspire our students.

For a start we need to rethink ballet class and let go of tradition when it no longer serves us well.

I am reading essays in a book edited and curated by Adesola Akinleye: “(Re:) Claiming Ballet”, published in 2021 by Intellect. Some essays are relevant to this topic. One I highly recommend is “Ballet Aesthetics of Trauma, Development and Functionality” by Luc Vanier and Elizabeth Johnson.

(Re:) Claiming Ballet

Let’s keep sharing our ideas.
